The hardest instrument to play
A reporter once asked Leonard Bernstein which instrument was the hardest to play. His answer: second fiddle. “I can get plenty of first violinists. But to find one who plays second violin with as much enthusiasm… now that's a problem. And yet if no one plays second, we have no harmony.”
The bi-vocational pastor is the second violinist. Not the star. The one who shows up faithfully, plays the part well, and makes the whole thing work, while most of the audience has no idea they're even there.

Mark Sentell was a full-time pastor for ten years before he left in 1999, joined a bar band, went into business, and accidentally planted Living Faith Church in Fombell, Pennsylvania. He has served it as a bi-vocational pastor for twenty-five years without taking a salary.
